Astrology: planets, signs and houses

A birth chart is a map of the sky at one moment and place. Its symbols become readable through a simple grammar: a planet describes what is acting, a sign describes how it acts, and a house describes where in life that action takes form.

How to read a placement

Begin with the planet, then modify it by the sign, and finally place it in the field of the house. Mars in Libra in the seventh house, for example, brings assertion and conflict into a relational field, but asks them to operate through balance, negotiation and awareness of the other.

No placement stands alone. The ascendant sets the chart's horizon, the Midheaven points toward public life, and relationships between planets — aspects — show where their impulses cooperate, strain or require integration. The Veil treats these as symbolic tendencies, not fixed verdicts.

The planets

The seven traditional lights and planets form the classical core; the three modern planets add slower collective themes.

Sun

Identity, vitality, purpose and the centre around which the life gathers.

Moon

Instinct, memory, bodily rhythms, emotional need and the private self.

Mercury

Thought, speech, learning, interpretation, trade and movement.

Venus

Attraction, relationship, pleasure, value, harmony and aesthetic judgement.

Mars

Desire, assertion, anger, courage, severance and directed action.

Jupiter

Growth, faith, generosity, law, opportunity and the search for meaning.

Saturn

Limit, time, duty, discipline, fear and the authority earned through work.

Uranus

Awakening, disruption, freedom, invention and breaks with convention.

Neptune

Vision, dissolution, devotion, glamour, compassion and the boundless.

Pluto

Compulsion, buried power, death-and-renewal and irreversible transformation.

The four angles

The Ascendant is the eastern horizon: embodiment, approach and first impression. Its opposite, the Descendant, describes encounter and partnership. The Midheaven marks culmination, vocation and public visibility; the Imum Coeli beneath it marks roots, home and the private foundation. Planets close to these angles speak loudly.

Weaving astrology into tarot

Tarot gives a present question an image; astrology gives that image a larger climate. A card need not be forced into a one-to-one equation with a planet or sign. First read the card, its position and its direction. Then ask whether the chart repeats, complicates or steadies its theme.

A relationship card beside a strong seventh house may sharpen the question of mutuality. The Hermit during a Saturn period may emphasise disciplined solitude rather than loneliness. The Tower under an active Mars signature may call for conscious action before pressure becomes rupture. Repetition strengthens a theme; contradiction adds nuance. Neither system removes choice.

Western and Vedic views

This guide describes the Western tropical chart used in The Veil's circular natal wheel. The Vedic view uses the sidereal zodiac, bhavas, nakshatras and Vimshottari dashas. It is offered as a distinct tradition rather than blended silently into the Western system.
