Hexagram 1

The Creative

乾 · 건

Heaven over Heaven

The Judgment

The Creative is the originating power by which things arise, unfold, find their fitting relations, and endure. Its promise is great, but strength becomes fruitful only through correctness and constancy. The person who answers this time must unite clear purpose with patient cultivation, neither dispersing energy nor forcing its season. True authority does not merely begin an undertaking; it sustains the whole course, allowing each being to fulfill the nature entrusted to it.

The Image

Heaven above heaven presents movement without exhaustion, each circuit renewing the work of creation. The noble one therefore cultivates a strength that does not depend on excitement or applause. Through steady discipline, the mind remains clear, the will remains upright, and effort continues without becoming harsh.

In the light of the Dao

Creative power is deepest when it does not contend with what it creates. Like the spacious sky, it gives room while sustaining movement. Follow the arising of things rather than imposing restless intention; inexhaustible action comes from a center that does not strain.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line speaks only when it moves — when the cast gives it as 6 or 9.

  1. First line · the beginning · yang, nine

Creative power is still concealed, like a dragon dwelling beneath the waters. Do not seek office, recognition, or outward achievement before the season opens. Cultivate the root in obscurity; restraint now preserves the strength that later can serve the world.

  2. Second line · the inner centre · yang, nine

The hidden power has entered the open field, where its influence can be known. Seek the company of someone whose greatness rests on virtue, not display. Through such meeting, emerging ability receives direction and becomes useful beyond its own advancement.

  3. Third line · the threshold · yang, nine

The capable person works diligently through the day and examines the heart when evening comes. Advancement brings exposure, and exposure brings danger. Remain watchful without becoming fearful; unremitting care for what is right keeps vigorous action from turning into error.

  4. Fourth line · the minister · yang, nine

The dragon approaches the moment of ascent but still hovers near the depths. Movement and withdrawal are both possible. Test the opening without pretending certainty; when action answers the actual time rather than ambition, this unsettled position carries no fault.

  5. Fifth line · the ruler · yang, nine

Creative power now moves freely in the heights, able to bring benefit far and wide. Great responsibility requires intercourse with great virtue. Let worthy counsel surround authority, so that elevation becomes a means of nourishing others rather than magnifying oneself.

  6. Top line · the end · yang, nine

The dragon has risen beyond a fitting height, and strength has lost touch with those beneath it. Advance can no longer be sustained. Regret teaches the limit that pride would not acknowledge; begin the return before isolation hardens into ruin.
