Hexagram 12
Standstill

Heaven over Earth
The Judgment
Heaven and earth draw apart, and the channels through which life is nourished become obstructed. Lesser motives gain ground while the influence of the worthy recedes. Public affairs no longer reward upright purpose, and forcing a good undertaking through corrupt conditions may only compromise it. Recognize the season without surrendering your principles. Preserve what is sound, refuse dishonorable advancement, and prepare quietly for change. Withdrawal can protect the roots from which renewed order will eventually grow.
The Image
Heaven rises above while earth remains below, their movements no longer meeting in fruitful exchange. The noble one responds by conserving virtue and avoiding danger. Rather than accept honors supported by a disordered age, one lives with restraint, keeping integrity beyond the reach of salary and acclaim.
In the light of the Dao
When the currents separate, forcing connection merely exhausts the traveler. Return to the uncarved simplicity that office and ambition cannot improve. Withdrawal need not become bitterness: keep the inner springs clear, allow the obstruction its season, and watch for the first natural opening.

The six lines
Read from the bottom up. A line speaks only when it moves — when the cast gives it as 6 or 9.
First line · the beginning · yin, six
The roots of neighboring grasses are intertwined, so one movement involves many companions. Here the task is not eager advance but shared fidelity to what is right. Hold together without entering corrupt service; steadfastness in this beginning brings good fortune and the possibility of success.
Second line · the inner centre · yin, six
Those of lesser purpose prosper by accommodating themselves to prevailing power. The great person cannot make that bargain and therefore accepts obstruction. Endure exclusion rather than purchase access through submission; preserving a larger purpose within standstill is itself the beginning of a sound outcome.
Third line · the threshold · yin, six
One has embraced an unworthy position and must now bear its shame. The discrepancy between outward standing and inward merit can no longer be comfortably concealed. Let the discomfort expose what flattery hid; recognizing disgrace is more useful than inventing excuses for it.
Fourth line · the minister · yang, nine
Action becomes blameless when it answers a rightful charge rather than private ambition. The time begins to admit an ordering influence, and companions share in its blessing. Proceed only with genuine warrant; a self-appointed rescue may reproduce the disorder it claims to end.
Fifth line · the ruler · yang, nine
A great person brings obstruction toward its end, and good fortune becomes possible. Yet security depends upon remembering how easily loss returns. Bind the achievement to living roots, as firmly as to clustered mulberry stems; vigilant care makes recovery durable instead of merely impressive.
Top line · the end · yang, nine
Standstill reaches its limit and is overturned. What began in blockage ends in gladness, for no obstruction can permanently arrest the world's transformations. Welcome the release without forgetting its causes; the joy of renewal should strengthen the care needed to keep intercourse open.
