Hexagram 19

Approach

臨 · 림

Earth over Lake

The Judgment

Approach marks the advance of nourishing strength and the opening of fruitful relations. Those who can guide draw near to those who need guidance, and willing response makes substantial progress possible. Success depends on constancy, not on the favorable season alone. The warning of an adverse eighth month reminds us that increase contains the prospect of decline. Use the present opening generously and attentively, preparing for reversal without allowing foreknowledge of it to harden the heart.

The Image

Earth borders and supports the lake, approaching its waters without exhausting their depth. The noble one likewise draws near to others through teaching that does not grow weary and care that sets no narrow boundary. Authority becomes fruitful when its breadth of concern matches its firmness of support.

In the light of the Dao

True approach leaves room for the other to respond. It does not crowd, seize, or demand immediate ripening. As strength returns, remain aware of its eventual ebb. Gentle nearness accords with the Way when it nourishes what is emerging without claiming ownership of its growth.

The six lines

Read from the bottom up. A line speaks only when it moves — when the cast gives it as 6 or 9.

  1. First line · the beginning · yang, nine

Approach begins through a shared impulse toward the good. You are not advancing alone, and the response of a worthy companion strengthens the movement. Good fortune depends on keeping this fellowship upright, rather than mistaking mutual enthusiasm for sufficient guidance.

  2. Second line · the inner centre · yang, nine

A responsive approach joins strength with willing accord. The connection is timely and sound, bringing good fortune with nothing that need obstruct it. Continue through genuine affinity rather than coercion; the favorable response arises because your movement answers an actual need.

  3. Third line · the threshold · yin, six

An approach made pleasing by soft words offers no real advantage when sincerity and substance are lacking. Become troubled by this defect rather than pleased with your charm. Honest recognition and correction of the fault can release you from blame.

  4. Fourth line · the minister · yin, six

You approach fully, crossing the distance that rank, habit, or hesitation might otherwise preserve. Because the meeting is direct and appropriate, there is no blame. Be present to the actual person and circumstance instead of governing through a remote conception of them.

  5. Fifth line · the ruler · yin, six

Wise approach belongs to a great ruler who understands how to entrust work to capable people. Insight does not require managing every detail. Recognize sound judgment in others and give it room to act; such intelligent confidence brings good fortune.

  6. Top line · the end · yin, six

Approach is generous and wholehearted, even from a position where withdrawal would be easy. You turn toward those below without calculation or condescension. This breadth of feeling brings good fortune and no blame, sustaining fellowship beyond the first excitement of advance.
