Hexagram 44
Coming to Meet
姤 · 구
Heaven over Wind
The Judgment
Coming to Meet marks the sudden arrival of an influence that appears small but carries unusual power. Attraction may outrun judgment, and what first seems a passing encounter may seek a lasting place in the household. Do not bind yourself lightly to such a force. The warning is against an unequal union in which desire overthrows rightful order. Recognition must be early, boundaries clear, and courtesy free from the mistaken belief that every meeting should become a commitment.
The Image
Wind travels beneath heaven, reaching places that cannot be touched by a single visible hand. The ruler takes this as a pattern for making sound commands known throughout the land. Guidance must circulate widely and intelligibly, so that distant households are not left outside the order of care.
In the light of the Dao
What enters softly may govern what seemed strong. The Daoist lesson is not to fear every encounter, but to notice the first stirring before desire names it destiny. Meet what comes without grasping; preserve the quiet center from which either welcome or refusal can arise.

The six lines
Read from the bottom up. A line speaks only when it moves — when the cast gives it as 6 or 9.
First line · the beginning · yin, six
Restrain the new impulse at its first appearance, as a wheel is secured against movement. Remaining steady is fortunate; giving it a direction to pursue invites trouble. What looks weak already contains restless energy, like a young animal eager to break through its enclosure.
Second line · the inner centre · yang, nine
The arriving influence is contained within your immediate keeping, and no fault need follow. Attend to it discreetly and maintain the boundary. It is not something to spread among visitors or turn into a shared attraction; proper custody matters more than display or hospitality.
Third line · the threshold · yang, nine
Rest is uncomfortable and progress comes with difficulty. Though this feels threatening, the very impediment can prevent a more serious entanglement. Recognize the danger and do not force your way past the restraint. Being held back here may spare you a substantial fault.
Fourth line · the minister · yang, nine
What should have been held in responsible relationship is no longer present. The empty container signals more than a missed advantage: neglect or estrangement has removed the support on which action depended. Pressing ahead under these conditions brings misfortune; first acknowledge the broken connection.
Fifth line · the ruler · yang, nine
Shelter what is tender without advertising your own merit, as foliage shades a ripening fruit. Keep your excellence inwardly gathered rather than forcing an outcome. When the time is right, an unexpected gift may arrive from beyond your arrangements, answering quiet integrity rather than pursuit.
Top line · the end · yang, nine
You meet the approaching influence with a hard, elevated boundary, like horns held out against contact. This may bring embarrassment or the appearance of coldness, yet no essential fault follows. At this extreme, distance preserves integrity, though it cannot offer the ease of fellowship.
