Hexagram 45
Gathering Together
萃 · 췌
Lake over Earth
The Judgment
Gathering succeeds when many hearts find a worthy center. The ruler approaches the ancestral sanctuary, acknowledging that living fellowship rests upon obligations deeper than personal desire. Seek someone whose virtue can order the assembly, and remain steadfast in what is right. Generous offerings express the seriousness of the occasion; purposeful action gives the gathering direction. Numbers alone do not bring blessing. Unity becomes fruitful when reverence, sincerity, and a common undertaking hold the people together.
The Image
The lake rests upon the earth, collecting waters from many directions. Such abundance also carries the danger of overflow. The noble one therefore prepares the means of protection and remains alert to unforeseen disorder. A flourishing assembly needs both hospitality and boundaries, lest its accumulated strength become confusion.
In the light of the Dao
Waters gather by seeking the low ground, not by commanding one another. Become a receptive center rather than an imposing summit. When private insistence subsides, kinship discovers its own channels. Yet receptivity is not neglect: an open vessel still requires sound sides to hold what arrives.

The six lines
Read from the bottom up. A line speaks only when it moves — when the cast gives it as 6 or 9.
First line · the beginning · yin, six
Your sincerity is real but not yet steady, and competing attachments disturb the gathering. Confusion may first bring distress, then relief when the proper companion responds. Do not let embarrassment prevent the approach. Renew the bond openly, and the fault can pass away.
Second line · the inner centre · yin, six
Allow yourself to be drawn toward the rightful center rather than forcing an entrance. An inward affinity is already at work. If your purpose is sincere, even a modest offering is sufficient; the worth of the meeting lies in truth, not display.
Third line · the threshold · yin, six
You long to belong, yet find yourself outside the circle and can only sigh. Remaining in this discomfort brings little benefit. Approach those with whom a sound connection is possible. Some awkwardness may remain, but an honest movement toward fellowship incurs no blame.
Fourth line · the minister · yang, nine
You gather others while standing near, but not occupying, the highest place. Such influence is justified only by an outcome of unmistakable benefit. Do not build a faction around yourself. Let the gathering serve the whole, and exceptional good fortune removes the danger of blame.
Fifth line · the ruler · yang, nine
You possess the proper position for gathering others, yet rank does not ensure their trust. There is no inherent fault in your place, but something deeper must confirm it. Return to foundational sincerity and sustain it patiently; enduring integrity dissolves the grounds for regret.
Top line · the end · yin, six
The gathering has not answered your longing, and sorrow breaks into lamentation and tears. Do not disguise genuine grief as pride or anger. Its open expression reveals the heart without scheming. Though fellowship remains uncertain, such unfeigned distress carries no blame.
